As a means to introduce or further veterinary student understanding of animal shelters and the issues they face, both the Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program and the ASPCA are offering grants of up to $500 per week, for a maximum of two weeks, to offset travel and lodging expenses for externships in animal shelters. These are available only for Cornell veterinary students who apply and are approved. We are grateful for the continuing support of both Maddie's Fund and the ASPCA to enable students to gain shelter medicine experience.
Eligible externships must be to an animal shelter where there is at least one full-time veterinarian on staff. We have suggested a few shelters below that have hosted our students in the past, but these are not the only shelters that students may choose.
Most externships expose students to the overall workings of an animal shelter, as well as provide experiences such as performing surgery (for eligible 3rd and 4th year students), physical exams, participating in rounds, treatments, and general animal care. It is the responsibility of the student to check with a shelter they are considering to clarify what activities they will engage in.
